Puppy & Kitten Care Guide for New Pet Owners

Puppy & Kitten Care Guide for New Pet Owners
May 1, 2020

You are the proud new owner of an adorable puppy or kitten! Now what?

  • Schedule a puppy or kitten pet wellness exam with one of our experienced veterinarians. Be sure to bring a stool sample, any prior vaccination or medical history, and, if you are a new client, plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early to fill out paperwork.
    • As the owner of a new puppy or kitten, you will receive a wellness care packet including all information you need to know about caring for a young animal.
  • Consult with us to determine a proper puppy or kitten vaccination plan.
  • Start your new pet on a nutritious growth diet.
  • Consider spaying or neutering your companion animal between the optimal ages of four to six months. This is also a great time to microchip you pet.
  • Introduce early stages of veterinary dental care and tooth brushing habits.
  • After your furry friend has received proper immunization, you should socialize, socialize, socialize! Not only will your pet develop polite social manners around other animals and humans, your new puppy or kitten will also enjoy the playtime and exercise.
  • Behavioral training is best to begin between two and eight months of age.
  • Be sure your new companion receives plenty of exercise to burn all of that youthful energy.
  • Monitor stool for any diarrhea, worms, or blood.
  • Consider purchasing pet insurance (we recommend Trupanion).
  • When in doubt, call us at Kingston Animal Hospital at (781) 585-6525. We are always happy to answer any and all possible questions you may have regarding pet ownership.
  • Enjoy your new best friend!
